Hand a device to someone else

Passing a device to a new person or a new group.

Time needed: 10 minutes, plus setup time if the device is being erased.

Decide first: does it need erasing?

SituationWhat to do
Same team, same rules, and no personal data on it (a shared classroom tablet, for example)Just hand it over. Nothing to change.
Same team, but the device had one person's accounts and files on itErase and set up again.
Different team with different rules and appsMove it to the new group, and erase if there was personal data.

When in doubt, erase. Handing over someone's signed-in accounts causes far more trouble than ten minutes of setup.

Moving a device to a different group

The group decides which policy and apps the device gets. Ask an admin to move the device into the new group. At its next check-in the device picks up the new policy, installs the new apps, and drops the ones it should no longer have.

Confirm in Devices that the group has changed and the device shows compliant against its new rules.

Erasing and setting up again

  1. Back up anything the outgoing person needs. Once erased it is gone.
  2. Select Wipe on the device page — for organisation-owned devices only.
  3. Wait for the command to complete on the device's timeline.
  4. Enrol the device again into the correct group: Android, Windows.

For Windows you can often skip the full wipe: Selective wipe removes work data and unenrols the laptop, then you enrol it fresh for the new person.

Finish up

  • Update your own asset record with the new holder's name.
  • Check the device's compliance badge the next day — a new user often has to set their own screen lock first.
